*note these responses are all cis-women specific*
All the following therapist responded to the prompt ---->“Do you provide therapy for people  who want to process post-abortion (elective)? Looking for non-judgemental/supportive therapy. Do you all know of any therapy resources in the Twin Cities for people post-abortion?”

  • “Yes, we work with women post-abortion... and take most insurance + MA. The website link & office phone are below. There are 6 of us now here specializing in issues relating to reproductive/perinatal challenges & transitions. The elective abortion cases we see seem to fall into 2 categories: 1) those who were wanting to have a child, but due to medical issues are facing the decision to terminate in later pregnancy, and 2) those that may not have wanted a child, and who are choosing to terminate. Women are often referred to us before the procedure to help support her process leading up to & through it. Afterwards, we help her process the grief/loss, but also with the accompanying issues... spiritual-religious guilt, social stigma, conflicts with family/partner, worry/hopelessness about future pregnancy or having a family, etc. Our goal throughout, is to help her acknowledge, & validate her own choices/needs given the realities. For some, elective abortion naturally challenges the existing belief & value/cultural system... which we try to remain respectful of...while helping her to hopefully "make more room" for herself & her experience within that framework. One of our therapists, Amber Pone, identifies herself a Christian therapist, while Lisa Miles & I have worked with many Somali/muslim women. Lisa also works with many Native American women... but all of us are comfortable learning & working within whatever framework a woman brings.”

  • “Yes, I definitely provide this service and have in the past. I'm not aware of a ton of resources - there used to be (years ago) a support group for women who'd had elective abortions but I don't think it runs any more. I'll do some digging.”

  • “I do this type of work, and am available. I'm sure you'll hear from the other therapists you included, too. I know you know Deb Rich from her presentation at SPIRAL and she would be a resource as well.  Psychological Associates at Cleveland and St. Clair is a group practice of women psychologists. I think they'd be open to this area, and skilled with it. I'm not aware of other specific resources for women post-abortion, but will keep my ears open.”
